An artificial cross between Pinot Noir × Cabernet Sauvignon, Carminoir was obtained in 1982 at the Agroscope research center in Pully (Switzerland) with the aim of creating a grape variety richer than Pinot Noir, while being resistant to gray rot. Late variety, to be reserved for the best exhibitions in Valais and Ticino, Carminoir is still little planted in Switzerland where it produces colorful wines, powerful and rich in tannins, used as a blend or as a single varietal.
