An artificial Gamay × Reichensteiner cross, Gamaret was obtained in 1970 at the Agroscope research center in Pully (Switzerland) with the aim of creating a grape variety similar to Gamay, but more resistant and rich in color. Officially marketed in 1990, it is a brother of Garanoir and Mara. Named after its parents, the Gamaret is precocious and offers great resistance to gray rot. Cultivated mainly in Switzerland, but authorized in Beaujolais (F) since 2008, its wines are colorful, spicy, very tannic, and are often used in blending.
