A natural Pinot × Gouais Blanc cross, Gamay was probably born in Burgundy (F) where it is already mentioned (and banned ...) in 1395. Its kinship makes it a brother of Chardonnay, Aligoté, Melon and other less known grape varieties, and allows us to understand why it has long been confused with Pinot Noir, especially in French-speaking Switzerland where both were called Dôle. Its name comes from the village of Gamay near Saint-Aubin in Côte d'Or (Burgundy). An early variety and susceptible to disease, its yields must be controlled on soils that are too rich. In Switzerland, where we find an old biotype named Plant Robert in Lavaux, it is an important grape variety that produces wines with notes of red cherries and peony.
