Maréchal Foch

An artificial hybrid of Millardet and Grasset 101-14 OP × Goldriesling, this grape variety was obtained in 1911 in Colmar (Alsace, F) and named in honor of Marshal Ferdinand Foch, French general. He is a brother of Lucie Kuhlmann and Léon Millot. Very early and resistant to winter frost, it is cultivated in Switzerland in cool climates, mainly in German-speaking Switzerland where it produces intensely colored and tannic wines.

Aroma Potential

Gives a tannic wine, rich in alcohol, colorful, flat, of medium quality with a sometimes herbaceous flavor, with the presence of diglucoside anthocyanins, to drink chilled (8 °). It sometimes happens to meet jammy or smoked wines. Note that carbonic maceration suits it well, as does aging in oak barrels to give it structure. Aromas of blackcurrant, raspberry, strawberry, touch of spices.
