Muscat Blanc

Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is a grape variety of Italian or Greek origin which is widely distributed in Mediterranean countries, particularly in Italy under the name Moscato Bianco and in France under the name Muscat de Frontignan. In Switzerland, this grape variety susceptible to gray rot was already mentioned around 1535-1536 in Valais under the name of muscatellum. Since 2008, we know thanks to morphological and genetic studies that there are two different Muscat in Valais: the Muscat du Pays or Muscat Vert, which is identical to the Italian Moscato Giallo, and the Muscat Blanc, which is none other than the Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains. The two Muscats grown in Valais therefore probably arrived one via the Rhône valley, the other via the Simplon pass.
