Pinotage is a black vat variety obtained by Abraham Perold in 1925, then a researcher at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. It is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault (Cinsault previously called Hermitage, hence the word Pinotage, a contraction of the words Pinot and Hermitage).Particularly suited to its original terroir, it has won over some winegrowers with its early maturity. Some oenologists appreciate the mellowness which over the years rounds off the fruitiness of its early youth. Its deep color dresses flavors of spices.
Information
Aroma Potential
Gives a powerful, full-bodied wine with a beautiful dark purple color, very fruity with a rather intense and particular bouquet that becomes more refined with aging, with very elegant tannins, which can sometimes lack acidity. When its production is important and if the wines are obtained from fermentation at high temperatures, this can result in a slight bitterness on the finish with the presence sometimes of a very unpleasant odor of acetone.Note that this variety is certainly worthy of interest for the production of original rosé wines, taking into account that it gives them a particular taste pleasant to discover.Aromas of banana, caramel, jam, leather, spices, red fruits, dried fruits for an aged wine, toasted marshmallow, wild herbs, blackberries (mulberry or bramble), pepper, blue plum, vanilla.
