Vermentino has its origin in the vast geographical area between Corsica, Sardinia, Tuscany, Piedmont (where it is called Favorita) and Liguria (called Pigato). It takes its name from the Italian fermento, in reference to the sparkling character of young wines. In Switzerland, this grape variety, which is sensitive to spring frosts and mildew, produces aromatic and fruity wines, but it is hardly cultivated.
