The origin of this grape has caused much ink to flow. It was introduced from Austria to California under the name Zinfandel in the early 19th century. In the 1970s, it was identified with the Primitivo of Puglia, where it was introduced from Croatia at the end of the 18th century. In 2011, we could find its original name in Croatia: Tribidrag. The DNA test has also shown that it is a progenitor of Plavac Mali, the most widely used red grape in Croatia. In Switzerland, this early grape variety rich in alcohol is anecdotal.
