An artificial Gamay × Reichensteiner cross, Mara was obtained in 1970 at the Agroscope research center in Pully (Switzerland) with the aim of creating a grape similar to Gamay, but more resistant and rich in color. Officially marketed in 2009, it is a brother of Gamaret and Garanoir. Baptized with a fancy name, Mara is precocious and offers great resistance to gray rot. Grown exclusively in Switzerland, its wines are colorful, fruity, spicy, and are often used in blending.
Gives a quality wine, ample, original and distinctive, with a high polyphenolic potential, with tender, supple and coated tannins - if one does not lead the grapes towards over-ripening -, full-bodied, suitable for aging. In Switzerland, Mara is generally associated with other grape varieties. Aromas of spices, red fruits.
