Originally from the Rhône valley (F), named after a village near Montélimar in Drôme, Marsanne was introduced around 1845 in Sion in Valais where it kept the name of Hermitage or Hermitage, in reference to the famous vineyard of Drôme. The DNA test suggests that the Marsanne is a parent or a child of the Roussanne. Of medium maturity, Marsanne is very productive, with very large clusters, susceptible to fungal diseases. In Switzerland, it is cultivated practically only in Valais, where it gives dry or sweet whites, with aromas of raspberry liqueur, and a great aging capacity.

Aroma Potential

Vinified alone, its wine is light, slightly acidic with less bouquet and finesse, with capricious and disappointing aging. Its aromatic potential is however superior to Grenache Blanc but too weak to characterize a blend.Aromas of dried apricot, acacia, beeswax, honeysuckle, quince, spices, dried fruits (almond, hazelnut and walnut), jasmine, fresh lychee, acacia honey, citrus notes, white peach, berries of the forest , baked apple, liquorice, truffle.
