Native to the vast region spanning north-eastern France and south-eastern Germany, Savagnin Blanc is a very old grape variety, also known as Traminer, which has produced many natural children, such as Sylvaner (Johannisberg in Valais), Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Gruèner Veltliner, etc. In Switzerland, it is mentioned for the first time in 1586 in Upper Valais under the name of Heida, meaning very old and translated into Pagan in Lower Valais, with reference to ancient times, before evangelization. Its surfaces are constantly increasing because Heida or Païen is a wine of great structure, with notes of citrus and exotic fruits, with good aging potential.
