Originally from Austria, Sylvaner is a natural cross between Savagnin (Heida in Valais) and Österreichisch Weiß, an old Austrian grape. Its name comes from the Latin silva = forest, indicating a supposed wild origin. In Switzerland, it is particularly cultivated in Valais where it is called Johannisberg in reference to a famous wine estate in Rheingau (D). Its wines offer aromas of hazelnut and moderate acidity.
