September in the Vineyard: A Harvest Almanac
What the ninth month asks of every winegrower, row by row.
September is the month the whole year has been pointing toward. The mornings turn cool, the afternoons stay warm, and the grapes finish the slow work of turning sunlight into sugar. For the grower, it is a month of constant tasting: a berry here, a berry there, waiting for the precise moment when acidity and ripeness meet.
This almanac entry walks through the rhythm of an ordinary harvest week, from the dawn check of the weather station to the late-night sorting table. The decisions are small but unforgiving, and the difference between a good vintage and a great one is often measured in a single warm afternoon.
